Ghana Commercial Bank Limited (GCB) has donated a total of GHS2,103 million to three institutions and one individual for various causes which tie into the Bank's social responsibility programme. Of the amount the University of Energy and Natural Resources and University of Health and Allied Sciences received GH¢1,000,000.00 (One million Ghana cedis) each to support infrastructure development on their two campuses as part of GCB's contribution towards Education and Health improvement.

The universities have been established to produce graduates who are versatile to academia, industry and medical practice and to meet the needs of Ghanaians in the areas of health care, environment, science and technology.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences seeks to create and enhance access to tertiary education as well as train the needed specialists in the areas of Science and Health Sciences. It is situated at Sokode, near Ho in the Volta Region.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources, which is sited in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, would also create and enhance access to tertiary education and train specialists in energy and natural resources for national development.

The third beneficiary, the Ghana Public Health Book Project received GHC100,000.00 to publish a long over-due book on Public Health in Ghana. The book will document the history and
development of public Health in our dear nation.

GCB also donated GH¢3,000.00 to Mr. Reuben Anani, visually impaired and whom the Bank had sponsored through three years of education at the University of Ghana, Legon. Mr. Anani with an entrepreneurial spirit has set up a musical band, the Humble Beginners, to offer employment to others. The Bank's donation is to enable him acquire more musical instruments to support his initiative and better generate income for himself as well as his employees.

The Board Chairman of the Bank, Dr Fritz Gockel said GCB was set up to support indigenous Ghanaian businesses and the Bank has successfully carried out this mandate and linked it to
community support in the national interest. He said the Bank's commitment to indigenous Ghanaian businesses and national development cannot be over-emphasized, saying this underpinned the establishment of the Bank in 1953.

The Board Chairman said the donations would mark the beginning of "a great relationship" between the beneficiaries and GCB. Areas GCB has been supporting under its Corporate Social Responsibility policy include Education, Agriculture, Sports, Environment and Community Development.
