"This is going to come home. It’s going to rest here…” declared Socrates Afram, Chief Finance Officer of GCB Bank PLC (GCB), when officials from the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) presented the coveted Bankers League trophy to the Bank’s Head Office during its April 2025 tour ahead of kickoff.
At the final event held at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, 18th October 2025, that bold promise was delivered to the letter. GCB asserted its dominance in corporate football, capping off a stellar run with a performance that echoed its commitment to leadership, consistency and excellence. The Bank’s investment in people and culture was on full display throughout the league, reaffirming its distant number one status.
After 16 fiercely contested matches, Team GCB was crowned Champions of the 2025 Bankers League. This was no stroke of fortune. It was discipline, teamwork and an unrelenting appetite to win - qualities deeply rooted in GCB Bank’s culture.
Speaking after the triumph, Head Coach Julius Ablorh remarked, “I am filled with pride because we ended the tournament with an impressive 12 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. We found the back of the net 21 times and conceded only 6.” He took delight in the defensive effort. “Our defense stayed watertight, led by Edem Norvinu of the Central Processing Centre - our own Oliver Kahn prototype, who delivered 13 clean sheetsand made it look like goalkeeping is genetic. The boys were brilliant, and I am proud to have worked with them to achieve this feat.” Julius was also recognized as the 'Best Coach' of the 16-week competition.
Reflecting on the victory, top scorer Nana Kesse Mensah of the Liberty House Branch, who netted seven goals, summed up the mood: “We entered this league with one mission; win and reflect the dominant status of our great Bank. There was no space to play catch-up. Our job was to prove that champions don’t win once,they keep winning. We are GCB Bank.”
In the final embers of the league, when nerves typically crack, Team GCB showed aplomb, class and conviction, sealing a commanding 2–0 victory over UBA and a decisive 1–0 win against CBG.The eleven-member squad demonstrated unwavering dedication and hard work. Their contributions were recognized as pivotal in the team’s success, leaving an indelible mark in the annals of history:
